Conflict Management Training for Local Council Staff - Ministry of Social Transformation hosts Workshop for Local Government Clerks & Supervisors

The Star (St. Lucia) - - LOCAL -

Recognizing the need to maintain an effective local government interface, the Ministry of Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment has provided Conflict Management Training to local government council staff.

The workshop, held from April 15-16, 2015 was facilitated by the Deputy Director of Administration of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning & Social Security, Ms. Peggy Ann Soudatt.

Ms. Soudatt said the training is intended to guide council staff to deal with conflict on the job in a way that minimizes the escalation of inherent individual differences into unmanageable circumstances.

“When we are confronted with situations, because of our personalities and so on we don’t react the same as other people in the same situation. Just the way people approach each other - the body language - may cause another person to react in a manner that is probably not the best way to react. It happens to the best of us. And the Ministry of Social Transformation, having identified that it is an area that is important to effective management, requested that I facilitate this workshop, and I am very happy to be a part of this professional development,” Ms. Soudatt said.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment, Ms. Juliana Alfred encouraged participants to apply the training provided appropriately. “Upon completion of this workshop, you would be better skilled in being able to deal with the many issues that confront you as managers of the constituency councils.”

Ms. Alfred continued, “I am hoping that you will take what is happening here and put it into good use; don’t go back to your office and put it in a folder! The intention is that you utilize the skills you are learning here to ensure you become more efficient and effective managers in the councils.”
