New Executive for Jamaican Community
The Jamaica-St. Lucia Community held its 18th Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, March 18th at Caribbean Cinemas. Outgoing President Mr. Leathon Khan explained in his report to the members that though the Community may have been relatively quiet over the past two years compared to previous years, a number of important community service activities and social events did take place. These included: (i) A cash donation of EC$4,000 to the Crisis Centre (ii) Christmas party at Caribbean Cinemas for children of the Crisis Centre (iii) Assisting the Saint Lucia Football Association with the hosting of an international friendly football match between Jamaica and Saint Lucia (iv) Co-hosting of a joint social and games evening with the Guyana-Saint Lucia Association (v) Hosting of a Breakfast Reception in honour of Tessanne Chin, winner of NBC’s The Voice (vi) Christmas party for children of the Achievers Early Childhood Development Centre in Grande Riviere (vii) Hosting of Bob Marley Poolside and Garden Party, held in honor of his 70th birthday (viii) Participating in the International Food Fair in Vieux Fort to celebrate Saint Lucia’s 36th Independence anniversary.
A special word of thanks was expressed to the core of dedicated members, the many loyal sponsors and the general public for their unwavering support over the years.
The guest speaker was Dr. Marcus Day, the Director of the Caribbean Drug & Alcohol Research Institute. He addressed the current hot-topic issue of the legalization of marijuana and its implications for the Caribbean.
A new executive was elected to guide the affairs of the Jamaica-Saint Lucia Community and is made up of a blend of youth and veteran experience. The executive was charged with the task of strengthening the vibrancy of the Jamaica-Saint Lucia Community and continuing its good work in Saint Lucia.
