All systems ready, set, go for Saint Lucia Carnival 2015
This could probably be the first time in the history of St. Lucia’s carnival celebrations that preparations are so far advanced and stakeholders so comfortable with the prospects for Carnival 2015.
The official launch of the 2015 carnival festivities will take place on Sunday May 24th under the theme “Odyssey, Journey into Carnival”. It is a highly anticipated event as the Carnival Planning and Promotion Agency opens the floodgates into eight weeks of intense carnival fetes, competitions and a celebration of music, colour and creativity.
A stellar line-up of who’s who in local entertainment circles is confirmed for the opening, among them the reigning Power, Groovy, Road March and Calypso monarchs. Former Calypso Queen Menell is also slated to perform. The eight Carnival Queen Contestants will also be formally introduced to a national audience.
Carnival bands will seize the opportunity to showcase their costumes and three of the island’s most entertaining musical groups are slated for a showdown on the bandstand. It is, in effect, a test of showmanship, vocal ability and bragging rights as Evalucian led by Groovy King Arthur, the Derek Yarde Project featuring ace drummer Thygeson Penn Joseph and the TJ Project led by the irrepressible Teddyson John battle for crowd reaction. Deejays HP and Hyper D will stitch the event together as they sample new and exciting local soca hits.
The sweet sound of steel band music will feature prominently as local bands tune up for yet another thrilling competition featuring bands from around the island – both large and small.
Sunday’s launch will also celebrate the sponsors who have made this year’s carnival possible with Digicel as the presenting sponsor with strong support from Radio Caribbean International Piton Beer, The Wave, RSL 97, Bounty Rum, First Citizens and Crystal Clear.
Sunday’s launch of St. Lucia Carnival 2015 at Samaans Park will pave the way for the Line-Jam which takes place the following day, Whit Monday, a national holiday.
