ECTEL Con­tin­ues to Cel­e­brate

Sec­ondary school stu­dents from sev­eral in­sti­tu­tions lo­cated in the en­vi­rons of the Saint Lu­cia-based head­quar­ters of the Eastern Caribbean Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions Author­ity - ECTEL, were ex­posed to the op­er­a­tions of ECTEL as well as other is­sues re­lated to tech­nol­ogy on Wed­nes­day, June 3.

IT/ICT stu­dents from Sir Ira Sim­mons Sec­ondary, Cas­tries Com­pre­hen­sive, Vide Bouteille Sec­ondary, St. Mary’s Col­lege, Corinth Sec­ondary and the Sev­enth-day Ad­ven­tist at­tended the Open Day.

The stu­dents learnt about ECTEL and its op­er­a­tions, ca­reers in ICT and at ECTEL in par­tic­u­lar, broad­band and open ac­cess is­sues in­clud­ing num­ber porta­bil­ity, cy­ber se­cu­rity, qual­ity of ser­vice stan­dards, net neu­tral­ity, re­spon­si­ble nav­i­gat­ing of so­cial me­dia and spec­trum man­age­ment.

Saint Lu­cia Sev­enth-day Ad­ven­tist Academy third-for­mer Dwayne Headley was ec­static about the event:“I learnt a lot in par­tic­u­lar about spec­trum and how de­vices can be used to pick up au­dio from dif­fer­ent parts of the world for free,” adding, “I hope to come back again or even work here [at ECTEL]; I am ac­tu­ally con­sid­er­ing it.”

His class­mate Jacinth Fred­er­ick agreed: “It [the visit] was very ed­u­ca­tional.”

The Open Day ac­tiv­ity is among a num­ber of events planned to mark ECTEL’s 15th an­niver­sary cel­e­bra­tions. The theme of the cel­e­bra­tions is: “Com­mit­ted to Broad­band and Open Ac­cess in a Dig­i­tal World”.
