Over three years ago a team of Latin dance enthusiasts lead by Peter St. Rose came together to form Salsa Saint Lucia. The aim was to spread the joy of, and appreciation for, Latin dance and music throughout the island. The group started hosting fun classes and events which soon mushroomed into a monthly party, periodic dance classes, activities for charity, a community outreach programme and an annual event dubbed Salsa Extravaganza.
This year, Salsa Saint Lucia is taking its annual extravaganza to new heights with the hosting of an entire weekend of activities from Friday September 25th to Sunday September 27th. It is expected to be three days of Latin parties, dance workshops, a dance exhibition and interaction with Latin dancers and DJs from neighbouring islands.
The event kicks off with a welcome party at Keebees in Rodney Bay which is a free event where Salsa enthusiasts will mingle and interact. Instructional workshops and classes will follow this on Saturday September 26th from 1 pm. According to the organizers these classes, which cost EC$50, are open to new and experienced dancers. “We will be having classes in Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and Zumba as well as styling for both men and women on that day,” Peter St. Rose told The STAR.
Next Saturday’s Salsa classes will be the precursor to the main event, the Salsa Extravaganza Gala which takes place on the evening of Saturday September 26th. From 9-10 pm guests will be welcomed with free treats as they mingle and have their photos taken. This will be followed by a Latin dance exhibition performance and the evening will conclude with the Salsa party featuring DJs from other islands. Admission is EC$50 and the gala will be at the Indies Nightclub in Rodney Bay.
The Salsa Extravaganza weekend concludes next Sunday with a wind-down Salsa Cooler lime at Pigeon Island. This event is free.
Advance tickets for next weekend’s Salsa Extravaganza are now available at RJ Clarke or from members of the group. For more information visit the Salsa Saint Lucia Facebook page.
