The Star (St. Lucia) - - ANIMAL WELFARE -

T wo missing dogs in the United States have been found safe after one loyally stood guard for a week when her canine companion got trapped in the woods. Tillie, a red setter, stayed with basset hound Phoebe after she became stuck in an old water cistern in a ravine in Washington state.

“For nearly a week Tillie stayed by her side with the exception of the few minutes of each day when she went for help,” said Vashon Island Pet Protectors, the group that rescued the dogs.

The pair were discovered after a member of the public reported a “reddish” dog had been coming onto their property for several days before darting back into the ravine. Phoebe was found inside the cistern, perched on some rubble to stay out of the water. The concrete walls were slightly too high for her to jump out.

The identity of their owners is not clear but volunteer group VIPP had been searching for the dogs for a week and it called Tillie’s refusal to abandon her friend “a humbling example of the power of love”. Both dogs are reported to be doing well. – Sky News
