DIGICEL'S HOSTS 4TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF FUN DAY FOR SPECIAL NEEDS
As Digicel continues to brighten and create a merrier Christmas for everyone during the festive season, the company was honoured to host the 4th Annual Festival of Fun Day for special needs children around the island. The fun day was held on December 3rd, 2015 (the day celebrated as International Day for Persons with Disabilities) at the Beausejour Indoor Facility in collaboration with the Sacred Sports Foundation and the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Management and Labour, Special Education Unit and NGOs.
Digicel was greeted by an overwhelming number of children with special needs from across the island - 475 in total - as well as teachers, invited guests and volunteers all excited and dressed up in their coloured T-shirts. The students proudly represented Dunnottar school, Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre, Dennery Child Development Centre, Vieux Fort Special Education Unit, Soufriere Special Education and Rehabilitation Centre, Educare Learning Centre, St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association and the Autism Resource Centre.
The day-long fun-filled event started off with a prayer, the singing of the National Anthem led by the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre choir then straight into a heartfelt welcome by the MC, Mr. Dale St. Juste, Education Officer, Ministry of Education – Special Ed Unit. Digicel's Country Manager, Siobhan James-Alexander commented: “Digicel is indeed proud to host another successful 4th Annual Festival of Fun Day. Digicel is very passionate about the special needs community and will continue to show support to you. Today is your day, to indulge, celebrate and have an extraordinary time as you participate carefully in the fun sports and other fantastic activities.”
Rufina Charles, Deputy Chief Education Officer for Instructions, declared the Festival of Fun Day open. Thereafter, the children were presented with an extraordinary day filled with games, food and lots of surprises. They were first treated to a warm breakfast, after which they headed to the different areas of the facility sectioned off for each sporting activity. The children enjoyed a day of face painting, bouncy castle, entertainment from mascots - Pepper Pig, Batman, Spiderman, Peter Pan and Bugs Bunny - plus horse rides followed by football, basketball, table tennis and much more. The day climaxed with a live performance from Digicel's Soca Ambassador Ricky T who had the children singing every line to his popular songs.
Digicel salutes its partners Pinehill, Paradise Water, Ti-Malta, Ferrands Dairy and Domino's Pizza plus volunteers and all those who made it possible for the children to have a successful 2015 Festival of Fun Day.
It was indeed a memorable and fun day for Digicel’s management and staff, and special needs children.
