RSLPF gives re­minder of Butcher­ing Laws

Amidst the busy Christ­mas sea­son the Royal Saint Lucia Po­lice Force (RSLPF) is re­mind­ing the pub­lic of the Act with re­gards to butcher­ing. Over the years there have been much pub­lic con­cern over the man­ner in which an­i­mals are slaugh­tered and meat is sold dur­ing the Christ­mas Sea­son. Sec­tion 18 of the Cat­tle and Brand­ing Act 2008 states un­der: PRO­VI­SIONS WITH RE­GARD TO SLAUGH­TER (1) A per­son shall not slaugh­ter or cause to be slaugh­tered in any place any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, calf, ram, ewe, sheep, lamb, goat or kid or any swine with­out first hav­ing ob­tained from a jus­tice of the peace, a po­lice of­fi­cer, a ru­ral con­sta­ble or des­ig­nated of­fi­cer a per­mit in Form I of the Sched­ule. (2) A per­son who slaugh­ters or causes to be slaugh­tered in any place any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, calf, ram, ewe, sheep, lamb, goat or kid or any swine is bound to keep the skin of such an­i­mal for 6 days af­ter such an­i­mal is slaugh­tered. (3) A per­son slaugh­ter­ing or caus­ing to be slaugh­tered in any place any such an­i­mal men­tioned in this sec­tion shall be bound within the said 6 days to pro­duce the skin of such an­i­mal to any po­lice of­fi­cer, ru­ral con­sta­ble or des­ig­nated of­fi­cer who shall re­quest to see the same. (4) A per­son who slaugh­ters or causes to be slaugh­tered in any place, any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, calf, ram, ewe, sheep, lamb, goat or kid or any swine— (a) with­out hav­ing ob­tained such per­mit; (b) fails or ne­glects to pro­duce such per­mit re­lat­ing to such an­i­mal to any po­lice of­fi­cer, ru­ral con­sta­ble or des­ig­nated of­fi­cer who may re­quest to see the same; (c) fails or ne­glects to keep, or cause to be kept the skin of such an­i­mal; or (d) fails or ne­glects to pro­duce the skin re­lat­ing to any such an­i­mal to any po­lice of­fi­cer, ru­ral con­sta­ble, or des­ig­nated of­fi­cer, who may re­quest to see the same, com­mits an of­fence and is li­able on sum­mary con­vic­tion to a fine not ex­ceed­ing $ 250. (Sub­sti­tuted by Act 15 of 1977) Sec­tion 19 of the same Act on the “PRO­HI­BI­TIONS ON SLAUGH­TER” states: A per­son whether a li­censed butcher or not who slaugh­ters or causes to be slaugh­tered in any place— (a) any cow or heifer with­out the per­mis­sion of des­ig­nated of­fi­cer; or (b) any an­i­mal which is known to be or ap­pears to be in calf, in lamb, in kid, or in pig, is li­able on sum­mary con­vic­tion to a fine not ex­ceed­ing $250. (Sub­sti­tuted by Act 15 of 1977). The RSLPF is so­lic­it­ing the as­sis­tance of all to act within the law.
