“Dishonorable” Justices of the Peace under fire

The Star (St. Lucia) - - LOCAL -

Accusing some Justices of the Peace here of behaving in a “dishonorable” manner, the founder and immediate past President of the Justices of the Peace Association (JPA), Doctor Urban Seraphin, has told the Times that legislation has been prepared to deal with the problem.

“We put together a draft piece of legislation and we went to see the Prime Minister with it,” Seraphin said in an exclusive interview with the Times.

He disclosed that the JPA has been informed that the document is now with the drafters.

“JPs are part of the judiciary and being part of the judiciary we have to do it right,” Seraphin, who is currently the Public Relations Officer of the JPA, told the Times. He said a lot of members of the association and those who are not members are behaving in an unacceptable manner.

Seraphin asserted that the proposed new legislation, presented to Prime Minister Doctor Kenny Anthony about two months ago, will outline their role and function. He lamented that some unscrupulous JPs are signing documents that they should not, including documents pertaining to deceased individuals.

“They are going to bring our little Island into disrepute because at the moment they are doing what they jolly well like,” Seraphin told the Times. He revealed that he and current President, John Daniel, are putting together a group of JPs who are behaving in an honorable fashion.
