Asou Square bangs back!
For many Asou Square was anything but a drag. In fact the event has been hailed a success this year, with the police reporting an incident-free celebration, save for a few minor skirmishes.
This year Asou Square was held at the Derek Walcott Square where it had returned in 2015. Activities started on the morning of Friday January 1st and ended on Sunday January 3rd. The three day event featured “live” entertainment by local acts, toy booths, zip-line rides for children and the usual fare of food and drinks. Pristine white tents purchased by the City Council were used as vending booths helping to uplift the general look of the event.
However, after all was said and done, some were asking “What were they thinking?” when several men usually associated with ol mas during carnival showed up for a mock fashion event. Fun for some but an eye-brow raiser for others as the men in drag did their thing.
For some it seems like it is their thing to dress in drag at carnival time and now at
Christmas and New Year too!
