PM Rings Election Bell!
During a televised address to the nation on Thursday May 19 Prime Minister and Leader of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), Dr. Kenny Anthony, said “we are ready” after announcing the election date. The prime minister said he had advised the Governor General to dissolve parliament and that General Elections will be held on June 6, 2016. According to Dr. Anthony the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has repeatedly called for elections and noted that it now has a date to work towards getting prepared.
The Prime Minister said that preparations have already been put in place to get into full election mode, explaining that the government has moved to authorize the estimates and expenditure.
The address was broadcast “live” on local radio and TV and was viewed by SLP faithful on the Castries Market steps ahead of a public meeting there that night.
Responding to the announcement mere minutes after the PM’s address, leader of the UWP Allen Chastanet wrote on his Facebook page: “I am happy that the Prime Minister has set elections for June 6th. This is the best decision he has ever made since assuming office in 2011. It will be a very hard 17 days ahead and we have our work cut out for us.”
The UWP leader went on to appeal to all Saint Lucians to be on their best behaviour. “We need to have a very peaceful and violent-free election campaign. At the end of the day, we all are Saint Lucians and we must learn to respect each other even if we support different parties.”
His calls were echoed by Nancy Charles of the UWP during a press conference on Friday morning. Party chairman Guy Mayers also called for a “free, fair and peaceful campaign and general elections”.
Mayers announced the UWP’s full slate of 17 candidates ahead of a rally on Sunday May 22 in Derisseaux.
