GEW St Lucia ‘Fashiontrepreneur’ Competition - 2016

The Star (St. Lucia) - - LOCAL -

On Saturday evening Stephanie Devaux-Lovell hosted a fundraiser at the Saint Lucia Yacht Club. The purpose was to help Stephanie’s coach, Susannah Pyatt, accompany her to the Olympic games to compete in the Laser sail boat class. The two have been training particularly hard over the past six weeks.

The ticket-only event was a sell-out. Almost 100 people gathered at the yacht club to support Stephanie and were treated to food and drinks, a quiz night, short speeches, and an auction; it was an eventful night. The interesting quiz categories were: Stephanie, Olympics/sailing, and world news. Team Amy walked away with the grand prize.

Sponsors donated generously for the auction: an all-inclusive weekend for two at The BodyHoliday at Le Sport; a trip to Martinique for two people to shop-hop for a day with Wave Riders; a Swedish massage at the Face to Face Day Spa; a two-hour lesson with Kitesurfing Saint Lucia; a Treetop Canopy adventure for four people; a sunset cruise for two with Sea Spray Cruises limited; a dinner voucher at Big Chef Steak House; a dinner voucher at Tapas on the Bay; a pair of Vera Bradley sunglasses and a dinner voucher at Buzz restaurant.

Stephanie was thrilled to receive from Northwest Ltd a $2,500 cheque. It was presented by the company’s MD, Lawrence Bain, who officiated during the rest of the proceedings as a capable and humorous compere. Veronica Shingleton-Smith graciously gave a further cheque for $1,000. Overall, some $8,000 was raised on the night for Stephanie’s coach.

Stephanie will be at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on 5th August with the other Olympians representing Saint Lucia: Jordan Augier, Jeanelle Scheper, Lervern Spencer and Jahvid Best. This will be an exciting experience and a rewarding one in the medal stakes, we hope, for Saint Lucia’s athletes.

The Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, host organisation for Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) St Lucia, continues its series of GEW meetings as it prepares for the celebration of the event from 4th to 20th November 2016.

Last year’s first-ever GEW fashion design competition was a tremendous success and was highlighted at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) in Columbia in March 2016. The Chamber sees the need to continue to pioneer this competition which could possibly lead to regional and international competition. Aspiring designers are encouraged to be part of this global initiative and respond to the ‘Call for Ideas’ in October 2016.

On Tuesday 26th July, 2016 partners met to discuss and streamline the competition. Partner organisation Options Inc. agreed to take the lead to produce the event, offering all participants of the 2016 competition and the winners of the 2015 competition an opportunity to exhibit their designs at the annual ‘Strut for A Cause’ in November.

The Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture would like to thank all members for their willingness to support GEW St. Lucia as their involvement will ensure that GEW St. Lucia goes from strength to strength. An invitation is also extended to organisations island-wide to become partners in recognition of GEW 2016 and to attend monthly meetings as plans progress for a successful celebration. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 11th August, 2016 at Bay Gardens Hotel from 9:30 am.
