Who ever said this generation is not connected with the past is sadly mistaken. On November 3rd, KiddiCrew Theatre will demonstrate how culturally intact the current generation is. The theatre youth group was formed to continue the Folk Research Centre initiative to revive the Saint Lucian’s traditional masquerade by producing a December masquerade street parade. The mission continued with the management of ‘Proj Masq Camp’ since 2010, which sees them working with primary schools for an annual parade every December 13th.

Last Thursday the production company hosted an official press launch announcing their production for 2016. Before announcing the details of the show, the production management indicated the ‘KiddiCrew’s mission of bringing to theatre, the works of Roderick Walcott and the importance of doing so. Started in 2015, they have embarked on a task of producing a play from his works over the next 5 years. The group, which is made up of children from agees 8 to 17 years, have already received blessings from the Walcott family, the writer, UWI Open Campus and the Cultural Development Foundation.

This year, on November 3rd and 4th at 8 p.m. the National Cultural Centre, will come alive when the KiddiCrew Theatre proudly presents their second production entitled: ‘The Devil at Christmas. The play’s producer, June Frederick stated that this play “has great importance to our culture as it deals with the tradition ‘Devil at Christmas Time’, which is Papa Jab (a.k.a. Toes) who has an entourage of people. They have actually taken the tradition and Roderick Walcott created a story around it; it’s actually the death of Papa Jab, passing on the mantle to someone else.”

All are invited to come out and support the youngsters in their production.
