The Musical Youth of Saint Lucia
On the cool evening of December 8th, 2016 the Saint Lucia School of Music, along with six volunteers from the Venezuelan “El Sistema” Programme, produced an exceptional concert at Musicbox in Rodney Bay.
The event opened with Her Excellency Leif Escalona’s address when she expressed her utmost appreciation and support of Saint Lucia’s talented musicians. The Venezuelan ambassador sincerely thanked the audience for supporting the School of Music and urged that we continue to do so.
“El Sistema” is a world-renowned programme that was founded to keep Venezuelan youth occupied in a constructive, musical way. The six volunteers who are teachers of the programme came to the island and conducted workshops for ten weeks in which they taught various aspects involved in voice training and performing music. The combined efforts of the volunteers and the dedicated students created an evening nothing short of magical.
Infants adorned with antlers, Santa hats and jingle bells opened the show, coaxing endless “awws” from the audience as they sang at the top of their lungs and to their hearts’ content. Beginners and seasoned musicians in different classifications of musical instruments followed. A delicious concoction of wind and percussion instruments used to play Christmas songs was particularly pleasing to the audience, the innately skilled drummers triggering a standing ovation during their bows.
The highlight of the night was the orchestral performance. “Pirates”, better known as the musical from Pirates of the Caribbean, and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” were played for an attentive, utterly captivated audience. Afterwards, the choir joined with a heartfelt delivery, singing in English and Spanish. Renditions of “Sons and Daughters of Saint Lucia” and the Venezuelan national anthem ended the show.
Overall the concert flowed smoothly despite the fact that furniture and set-up on stage had to be rearranged after each performance. The students displayed true musical knowledge, and the volunteers bade goodbye to the school knowing they would be sad to leave.
The director of the School of Music, Richard Payne, gave the vote of thanks with the same gratitude as the ambassador.
