Al­liance Française Event on the No­bel Lau­re­ate Fes­ti­val Cal­en­dar

Al­liance Française is pleased to be part of the No­bel Lau­re­ate Fes­ti­val of 2017 which is a cel­e­bra­tion of Saint Lu­cia’s two No­bel Lau­re­ates, Sir Derek Wal­cott and Sir Arthur Lewis. The Fes­ti­val, which has been or­gan­ised by the No­bel Lau­re­ate Fes­ti­val Com­mit­tee un­der the Chair­man­ship of the Gov­er­nor Gen­eral, Dame Pear­lette Louisy, runs from Jan­uary 15th to Fe­bru­ary 4th.

On Wed­nes­day, Jan­uary 25th Al­liance Française will present an ex­cerpt of the play ‘Salome’ di­rected by Saint Lu­cian Travis Weekes, to be fol­lowed by a panel dis­cus­sion This will be the first time that Al­liance Française will be part of the of­fi­cial pro­gramme of ac­tiv­i­ties for the No­bel Lau­re­ate cel­e­bra­tions.

The play ‘Salome’, orig­i­nally writ­ten in French by Os­car Wilde, has been trans­lated into Kwéyòl by vet­eran drama­tist Al­lan Weekes. The fa­ther-son team of Al­lan and Travis is well known for ex­cel­lent Kwéyòl theatre pro­duc­tions. This project will be ex­cit­ing as it will be per­formed in French and Kwéyòl si­mul­ta­ne­ously by ac­tors Richard Am­broise and Tasha ‘Wendy’ Sealy of Saint Lu­cia and Em­me­lyne Oc­tavie and Roland Zalian of Mar­tinique.

‘Salome’ will be used as a stim­u­lus for the panel dis­cus­sion which will fol­low the play, the topic be­ing ‘Link­ages be­tween French and Kwéyòl in Lan­guage, Lit­er­a­ture and Cul­ture. The panel for the evening will in­clude Dame Pear­lette Louisy as the spe­cial guest. The dis­cus­sion will be mod­er­ated by Stephane Dovert, Re­gional Counselor for Co­op­er­a­tion at the French Em­bassy to the OECS Mem­ber States and Bar­ba­dos in Cas­tries.

Al­liance Française is hon­oured to host these two events un­der the aus­pices of the Gov­er­nor Gen­eral, Dame Pear­lette Louisy. The play ‘Salome’ will com­mence at 7:30 p.m. at The Pyra­mid, Point Seraphine, Cas­tries. Ad­mis­sion to these events is free to the gen­eral pub­lic.
