Meet the Workers Tour takes Prime Minister to Victoria Hospital
Assessing the state of the public service has led Prime Minister Honourable Allen Chastanet on a tour to see firsthand the working conditions of public servants and to hear directly from them various concerns and challenges.
The Office of the Prime Minister announced in May that the Prime Minister would embark on tours of various government offices and statutory bodies in June and during the rest of the year.
“This tour is about making a connection and understanding the environment in which we are asking people to work every day,” noted the prime minister. “Sometimes we review a report and we don't get that true sense of the situation. I want to have open dialogue directly with the workers.”
On Thursday June 22, 2017 the prime minister did just that when he visited with the staff of the Victoria Hospital.
“I really also wanted to tell them all 'thank you' for their commitment. I know that they are all waiting patiently for the move to the Owen King-EU Hospital and until we get to that point, we have to ensure that they have what they need in order to deliver effective service to the public,” said the prime minister.
Acting Executive Director of the Victoria Hospital, Ms. Brenda Calixte, said the staff welcomed the opportunity to meet with the prime minister.
“The prime minister was with us during the time of the recent blast so he got an idea of the extreme challenges we face with the ICU,” explained the Director. “It was a chaotic time so it was a really good thing for staff to see him in a different capacity today and take him around our offices and the hospital. The staff was elated to share their concerns; it meant a lot to some of them because we know that the prime minister has a busy schedule and the fact that he can actually come and see what's happening with us, most of the staff were taken aback. It really means a lot.”
The prime minister is also scheduled to visit the St. Jude Hospital and other government institutions this month.
