Crit­i­cal Is­sues on the Agenda at CARI­COM Heads of Gov­ern­ment Meet­ing

Prime Min­is­ter Allen Chas­tanet, Min­is­ter with re­spon­si­bil­ity for Ex­ter­nal Af­fairs, Sarah Flood­Beaubrun and Am­bas­sador to CARI­COM Her Ex­cel­lency Elma Gene Isaac, at­tended the CARI­COM Heads of Gov­ern­ment con­fer­ence held in Gre­nada this week. The meet­ing was con­vened un­der the Chair­man­ship of the Prime Min­is­ter of Gre­nada, Dr. Keith Mitchell.

This thirty-eighth meet­ing of the Con­fer­ence of Heads of Gov­ern­ment fell on the CARI­COM an­niver­sary of July 4th with sev­eral sig­nif­i­cant agenda items down for con­sid­er­a­tion by the Heads of Gov­ern­ment in­clud­ing re­gional se­cu­rity, the CSME, tourism, air trans­porta­tion and op­por­tu­ni­ties for fi­nanc­ing for de­vel­op­ment. Also dis­cussed were sta­tis­tics de­vel­op­ment for the re­gion, ICT, repa­ra­tions and the 2007 Port of Spain Dec­la­ra­tion: ‘Unit­ing to Stop the Epi­demic of NonCom­mu­ni­ca­ble Dis­eases (NDCs)’.

Speak­ing to lo­cal me­dia ahead of the trip Saint Lu­cia’s prime min­is­ter made men­tion of crit­i­cal is­sues he felt needed to be dis­cussed at the CARI­COM level, in­clud­ing Brexit and the sit­u­a­tion in Venezuela.
