Oktoberfest en Kweyol The Accidental King of Soca
BEER, FOOD AND CREOLE FASHIONS! WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?
On the first Sunday in October, Windward and Leeward Brewery Limited will stage its seventh annual Oktoberfest En Kwéyòl at Samaans Park, marking the first major activity for Kwéyòl Heritage Month here in Saint Lucia. The event features live performances including local steel bands, drummers and dancers, Creole food stalls offering local delicacies and a variety of locally-brewed as well as imported beers. Over the past six years it has grown in popularity as a must-do fête, drawing a mammoth crowd every year.
The original Oktoberfest was first held over 200 years ago in the city of Munich, Germany, more than 7500 km from the island. But over the past two centuries, the celebration has grown exponentially to become a truly global celebration of beer craftsmanship and tradition, with festivals held in cities and towns around the world. St Lucia is no exception.
The entertainment line-up for Oktoberfest En Kwéyòl 2014 promises to be an exciting mix of St Lucian, Caribbean and international musicians and the beers— always the star attraction—will include WLBL’s own portfolio of Piton, Heineken and Guinness, alongside international specialty beers and the annual Brew Masters' Special which patrons can to sample free upon arrival at Samaans Park.
Advice from the experts: “Make sure you get there early so you have time to sample all the great beers!”
