PIGEON ISLAND NATIONAL LANDMARK (468 5649) slunatrust.org A 44 acre peninsula under the stewardship of the National Trust. In the mid-16th century it was the home of French pirates, and from the 17th to 19th centuries the French and British military took turns in using it as a naval base, the ruins of which are all around the park. Walking trails are well-marked and the ‘island’ has some of the north’s most captivating sea vistas and cozy coves.
LA TOC BATTERY (452 7921) Another naval history site, revealing the complex technology of British engineering in the late nineteenth century within its series of underground rooms, ammunition lifts and tunnels, and incredible views over the north of the island all the way to Martinique.

ST LUCIA FORESTRY DEPARTMENT (468 5646) stlucia.org Whether it’s a hike into the lush rainforest or a specialized bird-watching tour, the Forestry Department has complete domain over the verdant interior of the island. A guide must accompany all forest forays. For a short walk, follow Union Nature trail, which also features a mini-zoo perfect for children. For indigenous trees, check out Piton Flora, and for a great chance to spy the St. Lucian Parrot, go to the Millet bird sanctuary. TET PAUL NATURE TRAIL (459 7200) soufrierefoundation.org Nestled on six acres of lush, verdant land in the farming community of Chateau Belair, the trail is located in the Piton Management Area, Saint Lucia’s World Heritage Site. The hike is rated easy to moderate and is roughly 45 minutes long.

Or, try a quick flight to the blissful paradise of Union Island in the Grenadines for a day of snorkeling, diving and sailing.
ANSE CHASTANET REEF Can be entered from the beach with fabulous coral and abundant sea life at a mere 25 feet. As the slope falls off to depths of 140 feet, this site becomes one of the most stunning in the Caribbean.
ANSE LA RAYE A drift dive that falls below a shallow wall to reveal fascinating formations.
CORAL GARDENS Located at the base of Gros Piton where finger coral displays form an underwater garden. FAIRY LAND Vividly rich in color as the swift currents of the area keep the waters crystal clear to magnify the brilliance of coral and sponges.
KEY HOLE PINNACLES Voted one of the ten “best dive sites” by Caribbean Travel & Life. Key Hole Pinnacles showcases four gorgonian-encrusted seamounts, St. Lucia’s underwater answer to the Pitons above.
SHIPWRECK LESLEEN M A 165-foot freighter lies upright in 60 feet of water where divers may explore the ship while enjoying juvenile fish among the coral and fans.
SUPERMAN’S FLIGHT Continues along the wall at the base of Petite Piton, where it falls off to 1600 feet in depth. Divers drift along the current emulating the super hero’s flight between the Pitons in “Superman II”.
