In the mid-16th cen­tury it was the home of French pi­rates, and from the 17th to 19th cen­turies the French and Bri­tish mil­i­tary took turns in us­ing it as a naval base, the ru­ins of which are all around the park. Walk­ing trails are well-marked and the ‘is­land’ has some of the north’s most cap­ti­vat­ing sea vis­tas and cozy coves.

LA TOC BAT­TERY (452 7921) Another naval his­tory site, re­veal­ing the com­plex tech­nol­ogy of Bri­tish en­gi­neer­ing in the late nine­teenth cen­tury within its se­ries of un­der­ground rooms, am­mu­ni­tion lifts and tun­nels, and in­cred­i­ble views over the north of the is­land all the way to Mar­tinique.

A guide must ac­com­pany all for­est for­ays. For a short walk, follow Union Na­ture trail, which also fea­tures a mini-zoo per­fect for chil­dren. For in­dige­nous trees, check out Pi­ton Flora, and for a great chance to spy the St. Lu­cian Par­rot, go to the Mil­let bird sanc­tu­ary. TET PAUL NA­TURE TRAIL (459 7200) soufriere­foun­da­tion.org Nes­tled on six acres of lush, ver­dant land in the farm­ing com­mu­nity of Chateau Be­lair, the trail is lo­cated in the Pi­ton Man­age­ment Area, Saint Lu­cia’s World Her­itage Site. The hike is rated easy to mod­er­ate and is roughly 45 min­utes long.

ANSE CHAS­TANET REEF Can be en­tered from the beach with fab­u­lous co­ral and abun­dant sea life at a mere 25 feet. As the slope falls off to depths of 140 feet, this site be­comes one of the most stun­ning in the Caribbean.

ANSE LA RAYE A drift dive that falls be­low a shal­low wall to re­veal fas­ci­nat­ing for­ma­tions.

CO­RAL GAR­DENS Lo­cated at the base of Gros Pi­ton where fin­ger co­ral dis­plays form an un­der­wa­ter gar­den. FAIRY LAND Vividly rich in color as the swift cur­rents of the area keep the wa­ters crys­tal clear to mag­nify the bril­liance of co­ral and sponges.

KEY HOLE PIN­NA­CLES Voted one of the ten “best dive sites” by Caribbean Travel & Life. Key Hole Pin­na­cles showcases four gor­gonian-en­crusted seamounts, St. Lu­cia’s un­der­wa­ter an­swer to the Pi­tons above.

SHIP­WRECK LESLEEN M A 165-foot freighter lies up­right in 60 feet of wa­ter where divers may ex­plore the ship while en­joy­ing ju­ve­nile fish among the co­ral and fans.

SU­PER­MAN’S FLIGHT Con­tin­ues along the wall at the base of Pe­tite Pi­ton, where it falls off to 1600 feet in depth. Divers drift along the cur­rent em­u­lat­ing the su­per hero’s flight be­tween the Pi­tons in “Su­per­man II”.
