Merkel visit high­lights US ten­sions

Ger­man Chan­cel­lor An­gela Merkel and US Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump in the Oval Of­fice yes­ter­day dur­ing what they de­scribed as a con­struc­tive meet­ing, de­spite an awk­ward mo­ment when Ms Merkel of­fered a hand­shake in front of the cam­eras with­out get­ting a re­sponse.

At a news con­fer­ence, ten­sions over Ger­many’s big trade sur­plus with the US sur­faced, with Mr Trump say­ing Ger­man trade ne­go­tia­tors had been more suc­cess­ful than those of the US. He said he told Ms Merkel that Nato al­lies “must pay what they owe”, but he praised Ger­many for pledg­ing to raise its de­fence spend­ing to­wards 2 per cent of na­tional in­come, the level re­quired by Nato.
