Abk­hazia is re­garded as Ge­or­gian ter­ri­tory

Sir, So­phie Royle’s re­port “The wine in­dus­try of­fers hope for Abk­hazia” (FT Wealth, March 10) omits a crucial fact: Abk­hazia is re­garded by the vast ma­jor­ity of the in­ter­na­tional community as Ge­or­gian ter­ri­tory cur­rently un­der illegal Rus­sian mil­i­tary oc­cu­pa­tion. More­over, up to 80 per cent of the re­gion’s pop­u­la­tion has been re­moved as a re­sult of two waves of eth­nic cleans­ing car­ried out by the Rus­sian Fed­er­a­tion and its prox­ies.
