WOOD MARQUETRY

A 16th-century decorative technique, wood marquetry requires craftsmen to assemble tiny pieces of wood veneer to form intricate patterns. It is employed in the Tonda Woodrock (pictured here) and Tonda Woodstock watches of Parmigiani’s Tonda Tourbillon collection. The two models feature handcrafted dials each comprising more than 50 pieces of dyed wood and requiring up to 10 days of work. The company enlisted Bastien Chevalier, an internationally acclaimed marquetry artist famed for his knack for incorporating contemporary elements into the traditional craft, to create the designs of Gibson guitars bearing the United States and United Kingdom flags. The wood veneers are so seamlessly integrated with the rest of the design that the guitars look painted on.
