Gorgeously demonstrated on Piaget’s Altiplano Micro-mosaic Dial watch, micro-mosaic decoration was first used by 18th-century Italian artists Cesare Aguatti and Giacomo Raffaelli. It features patterns or images formed using bits of tesserae, tiny pieces of glass measuring less than 1mm each. The process begins with mixing and firing enamel or glass over high heat of up to 800 deg C, cooling it down, stretching it, and cutting it into tiny squares. This technique allows for a broad palette of up to 10,000 hues, which ensures subtle gradients and shades in the finished work.
