EAST MEETS WEST KARI VOUTILAINEN – 28 SARASAMON
Voutilainen collaborated with Japanese lacquer studio Unryuan to create this outstanding, one-piece-only watch that marries the Finnish watchmaker’s technical innovation with stunning lacquer art. Inside the timepiece is Voutilainen’s in-housedesigned movement, featuring his innovative direct impulse escapement. On the dial is an equally fastidiously crafted masterpiece made of gold dust, New Zealand abalone and great green turban shell. To form the iridescent floral motif, craftsmen filled up engraved channels with gold dust, applied tiny bits of shell by hand, then lacquered and polished the dial multiple times. The result, which took months to achieve, is a stunningly rich and colourful work of decorative art.
