The Santos de Cartier wristwatch made history when it first appeared more than 100 years ago in 1904. French jeweller Louis Cartier’s design was a gift for his friend Alberto SantosDumont, the Brazilian pioneer aviator who had mentioned the difficulty of carrying a pocket watch while flying. The new timepiece, with its square bezel, dial with Roman numerals, leather strap, and buckle, was named in his honour. Parisian men soon followed his lead (only women wore watches on their wrists at that time) and so the world’s first men’s wristwatch was born. Cartier has since updated the design with different versions in the Santos de Cartier collection.
