WHO THEY ARE In 1896, Estelle Arpels, daughter of a French gem wholesaler, married Alfred Van Cleef, son of a diamond merchant from Amsterdam. Alfred and brother-in-law Charles established Van Cleef & Arpels in 1906. The first boutique was located at the prestigious Place Vendome in Paris. CLAIM TO FAME Marrying the art of watchmaking with haute jewellery since the early 1900s, Van Cleef & Arpels has been at the forefront of innovative Swissmade designs, such as the chatelaine (1918), a jewel worn at the waist with a watch fastened to it, and a leather bag with a watch clasp. WHAT’S HOT The Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantee. The dial depicts a fairy ballerina with retractable “wings”, driven by an ingenious double retrograde movement that displays the time on demand.
