WORLD AUC­TION RECORD FOR GREY PEARLS

An ex­traor­di­nar­ily rare grey pearl neck­lace, punc­tu­ated by a clasp set with a rec­tan­gu­lar di­a­mond has sur­passed its pre­vi­ous auc­tion record of US$3.35 mil­lion to fetch $5.3 mil­lion at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Mag­nif­i­cent Jew­els and Jadeite in Oc­to­ber 2015. The neck­lace is ac­com­pa­nied by a pair of ear­rings fea­tur­ing nat­u­ral grey pearls sur­rounded by bril­liant­cut di­a­monds. Th­ese op­u­lent 42 salt­wa­ter pearls in illuminating shades rang­ing from brown to rosé are strung to­gether by Cartier and were once owned by Vis­count­ess Cow­dray, Lady Pear­son (1860-1932).
