THE LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2016
marks the fourth instalment of the international competition targeted at budding inventors with ideas that can shape a better future. Among this year’s finalists, a group of three Japanese designers calling themselves AMAM (derived from their names) presented an environmentally-friendly packaging idea that uses agar-agar. Yes, that stuff you make a jelly dessert with. What most of us may not know is that this gelatinous substance derived from seaweed has many other applications in microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. We look forward to finally seeing a reliable, natural and biodegradable replacement for plastic packaging.
