En­gi­neer Thomas Telford (left), painted in the hey­day of his ca­reer in 1822 by Sa­muel Lane. His de­signs in­cluded:

1 The Me­nai Bridge (also shown in box 5) wasn’t the first sus­pen­sion bridge but ar­guably the most im­pres­sive

2 The Pont­cy­syllte Aqueduct, which still car­ries ves­sels high above the river Dee over two cen­turies af­ter it was com­pleted in 1805

3 St Katharine Docks, Lon­don, as de­picted dur­ing of­fi­cial open­ing cel­e­bra­tions on 25 Oc­to­ber 1828

4 The 60-mile Cale­do­nian Canal, com­pleted in 1822, which con­nects the east and west coasts of Scot­land

5 The Me­nai Bridge in an 1830 il­lus­tra­tion view­ing it from An­gle­sey

6 Göta Canal in Swe­den, opened in 1832 to pro­vide a link be­tween Gothen­burg and the Baltic Sea
