It's known as par­tic­u­larly heinous ir­ri­tants for sen­si­tive skin – es­pe­cially sodium lau­ryl sul­fate (SLS). These ad­di­tives are usu­ally used in sham­poos and soaps to form suds and foam. Stud­ies have shown that sul­fates can com­pro­mise the skin's per­me­abil­ity, al­low­ing mois­ture to es­cape, which thins the skin's pro­tec­tive layer.
