A Little Bit Awks
I’m a little bit late to the whole Awkwafina party. The coolest of kids will have known her since she started rapping about her lady bits back in 2013. I, on the other hand, was working at a teen magazine at that time; which means while I’m basically a walking encyclopedia for One Direction and can recite the entire timeline for Justin and Selena’s relationship by heart, I’m sadly lacking in the comedic rap knowledge department.
But, while I may be late to jump on the Awkwafina bandwagon, now here I am making up for it with enthusiasm. She's hilarious, has a unique take on things and isn’t afraid to tackle the big issues, speaking out on diversity and making sure her voice was truly her own before she released her newest album. Don’t take my word for it, though – read our exclusive interview on p24 and you’ll get what I mean. Then prepare to join me on the fan club bandwagon, because this is the summer of Awkwafina – with two major movies ( Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians) and the mentioned album all dropping in the space of three months.
It seems apt that Crazy Rich Asians will be released here in August, the same month the entire country gets decked out in red and white. The hype around having Singapore appear in movie theatres around the world is building, so as National Day rolls around, we decided to take our declarations of love beyond the usual “Majulah Singapura” – we asked three local writers to pen love letters to Singapore on p56, and got eight artists to tell us what it’s really like to be a creative here on the little red dot on p70. I hope all these excellent women leave you feeling as inspired as we were!
