might ex­pect that a man afraid of crick­ets who also pos­sesses a hair-trig­ger right hook would not have an easy time with the Hol­ly­wood star-mak­ing ma­chin­ery. You would be right. Bern­thal’s emo­tions have been both a mo­ti­vat­ing and a dev­as­tat­ing force in his life, and his early ca­reer plunged him down a high­way of frus­tra­tion, mis­un­der­stand­ing, and road rage.

He got a sig­nif­i­cant part in Oliver Stone’s 2006 film World Trade Cen­ter, as a Port Au­thor­ity cop. Stone rode Bern­thal hard, and one day dur­ing film­ing he screamed that the ac­tor’s takes were ei­ther too over-the-top or too tepid. Even­tu­ally, Stone walked over from the video vil­lage and shouted at Bern­thal and a few other ac­tors.

“You are all so vain,” Stone said. He turned to Bern­thal and jabbed a fin­ger in his face. “And you are the worst.”

Bern­thal slapped the di­rec­tor’s hand away.
