One af­ter­noon, Levine sits down for a meet­ing with Drew Stone Briggs, chief prod­uct of­fi­cer and an early re­cruit from ri­vals Bose, and prod­uct de­signer Thomas Wil­son. They have a num­ber of projects on the go. But first, con­ver­sa­tion turns to a ri­val’s lat­est re­lease, re­views of which have been pub­lished that morn­ing. They have not been kind.

“An­other one for those guys, huh?” says Levine, be­hind his lap­top.

“Two medi­ocre re­views and one that was, wow, bru­tal,” says Wil­son.

“PCMag was just… yeah,” says Stone Briggs, shak­ing his head.

“How do you make a small for­tune?” says Levine, tee­ing up the joke with the punch­line “start with a large one and in­vest poorly”.
