How Furla has made a PVC Boston not only a signature, but also one of the most celebrated bags around.

The Shanghai-native ventured into fashion for the same reason many others do: She couldn’t find what she wanted to wear in stores. Going by her graduate collection, what she wants to wear is indeed anything but runof-the-mill. As inspired by the robes of Qin Dynasty emperors as she is by sportswear, she created a line-up of silk pullovers, baseball jackets and day dresses embroidered with elaborate Chinese motifs.

Citing avant-garde names like Rei Kawakubo and Issey Miyake as some of her favourite designers, she upped the ante by using plastic and gold foil for panels and embellishment.

“The baseball jacket that I opened my show with took a month to complete because I had to emboss the gold foil then apply it by hand,” she says of her tedious work process.“It’s not easy, but I believe that playing with unconventional materials and techniques will let me stand out as a designer.”

It’s a philosophy that she hopes will get her clothes hanging alongside that of her idols: Her dream is to have her own label stocked at cutting-edge Hong Kong multi-label store I.T.

Li plans to return to Shanghai later this year to start her own label.
