Artisan bakery and café Butter Studio prides itself on offering local-inspired homestyle bakes that are handcrafted daily with the finest quality ingredients

It’s hard not to notice this sweet darling while taking a stroll down Jalan Besar. The enchanting display of cupcakes in the window of Butter Studio – a halal-certified bakery and café is a good enough reason to make passers-by stop for a second glance.

Inside, the atmosphere is lively – maybe because everything is sweet and iced, baked and sugar coated. Here, the bakers work tirelessly to ensure that every cupcake is a work of art. Be sure to try the salted gula Melaka cupcake or the salted nutella tart, which is one of the bakery’s signature creations.

The owner Shannon Lua draws on local flavours in most of her recipes, combining sweet and savoury ingredients to create balanced flavours without overpowering sugariness.

Salted gula Melaka, milo speculoos fudge, and coffee and kaya toast cream-flavoured cupcakes are accompanied by a selection of rustic naked cakes, handcrafted tarts and artisan ice cream. If you’d like to custom-order, don’t be shy – the passionate bakers here are excited by eclectic requests. Recommended treats include the salted caramel red velvet cake – featuring layers of handmade classic red velvet cake layered with fluffy cream cheese frosting with house-made natural sea salted caramel drizzle; the speculoos ondeh cake – comprising natural pandan cake layered with caramelised speculoos cream cheese frosting topped with homemade gula Melaka sauce and desiccated coconut; as well as the sea salt nutella tart – consisting handcrafted shortcrust tart pastry filled with homemade natural sea salted nutella ganache.

On top of the booming bakery business, Butter Studio also does savoury fare prepared with high quality ingredients such as farmfresh eggs and local market produce – think poached eggs and hearty burgers.

In this feature, Shannon shares with us how the idea for Butter Studio came about, her thoughts on upcoming food trends and her business plans for the future.

HOW IT ALL STARTED?

Butter Studio was created out of the love for all things sweet – we believe that nothing is as comforting as a slice of handmade good ol’ fashioned cake especially after a long hard day. Butter Studio also believes in creating authentic, personal and well-crafted treats that are accessible to the community.

WHAT’S SO UNIQUE ABOUT THE OFFERINGS AT BUTTER STUDIO?

At Butter Studio, we don’t take shortcuts and all the tasty treats are handcrafted daily in-house. We also make it a point to always work with fresh fruits and purées, as well as natural flavourings – we take pride in not using any preservatives or stabilisers in our products. Another thing that sets us apart from other bakeries is that we like to put playful and creative spins on familiar local bakes to create unique cakes for any occasion.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES THESE CREATIONS?

We are constantly inspired by the people, things and experiences that surround us. But most importantly, we anchor our ideas on fond memories with family and friends, and we always try to recreate familiar comforting treats that one would imagine coming out of a home kitchen.

WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES THAT MAKE A GOOD CAKE?

A good cake is one that is delightfully presented and features wellbalanced flavours. Of course it has to be handcrafted with care and love using fresh, fine quality ingredients.

LOOKING AHEAD

We hope to bring Butter Studio nearer to our customers and are in talks with potential business partners to open more outlets locally and possibly in the region as well.

WHAT ARE SOME UPCOMING FOOD TRENDS THAT YOU FORESEE WILL HIT SINGAPORE SOON?

Singapore has a very vibrant F&B scene. We not only get to choose from a variety of international cuisines, but we get to experience the various food trends from around the world. Due to the fast-paced culture in Singapore, we foresee that there would be more varieties of fast serve restaurants opening in Singapore in the near future. Hopefully, there can be more health conscious options as well.

WHAT SETS BUTTER STUDIO APART FROM OTHER LOCAL BAKERIES?

We are constantly working hard at our craft – pushing creative boundaries, focusing on quality, as well as consistency for all our products. At the same time, we are always thinking of ways to effectively engage our customers. We are very blessed to have been able to forge a close relationship with many of our customers, many of whom have been with us right from the beginning when we first started.
