Like the cool older sib­ling of kitschy Mex­i­can restau­rants, Bar­rio by Mex Out takes the colour­ful vigour of the South Amer­i­cas and in­jects it with a dose of tongue-in-cheek at­ti­tude and de­signer re­la­jado am­bi­ente. Dec­o­rated with fairy lights and minia­ture cacti on the perime­ters, multi-coloured Aztec pat­terns and an en­vi­able playlist of old school hip-hop piped through the speak­ers; it’s hard to miss it amongst the stuffy eater­ies in the vicin­ity.

The food, served in no-fuss stain­less steel tins or taco hold­ers, comes over­flow­ing with Fresh-mex in­gre­di­ents of gua­camole, salsa and cilantro. There’s no doubt the por­tions are made for shar­ing over a beer – there are house-made Aguas Frescas so­das as well – or two. Even the tacos, the big­gest we’ve seen, are sub­stan­tial enough to sa­ti­ate one. We couldn’t de­cide which we liked best: the Carne Asada (S$13.90 for two, S$16.50 for three) that had bite-sized pieces of grilled steak flavoured with a fiery Sriracha sauce or the smoky Pulled Pork (S$12.90 for two, S$15.50 for three) drenched in chipo­tle aioli, Coti­jatas cheese and pick­led red cab­bage. You’ll also find a cosy list of tor­tas, Mex­i­can sand­wiches that re­sem­ble burg­ers, on the menu in­clud­ing the crispy But­ter­milk Fried Chicken (S$14.90) that proudly sits on a grilled bri­oche bun, topped with chipo­tle mayo and corn. ◆ #01-14/15, 313@Somerset, 313 Or­chard Road.
