Barrio by Mex Out

Food and Travel (Singapore) - - New Bites -

Like the cool older sibling of kitschy Mexican restaurants, Barrio by Mex Out takes the colourful vigour of the South Americas and injects it with a dose of tongue-in-cheek attitude and designer relajado ambiente. Decorated with fairy lights and miniature cacti on the perimeters, multi-coloured Aztec patterns and an enviable playlist of old school hip-hop piped through the speakers; it’s hard to miss it amongst the stuffy eateries in the vicinity.

The food, served in no-fuss stainless steel tins or taco holders, comes overflowing with Fresh-mex ingredients of guacamole, salsa and cilantro. There’s no doubt the portions are made for sharing over a beer – there are house-made Aguas Frescas sodas as well – or two. Even the tacos, the biggest we’ve seen, are substantial enough to satiate one. We couldn’t decide which we liked best: the Carne Asada (S$13.90 for two, S$16.50 for three) that had bite-sized pieces of grilled steak flavoured with a fiery Sriracha sauce or the smoky Pulled Pork (S$12.90 for two, S$15.50 for three) drenched in chipotle aioli, Cotijatas cheese and pickled red cabbage. You’ll also find a cosy list of tortas, Mexican sandwiches that resemble burgers, on the menu including the crispy Buttermilk Fried Chicken (S$14.90) that proudly sits on a grilled brioche bun, topped with chipotle mayo and corn. ◆ #01-14/15, 313@Somerset, 313 Orchard Road.
