Baba Chews Bar And Eatery
There are not many places in Singapore where you’d find a classic Eggs Benedict (S$18) and Udang Masak Lemak (S$20) like you would at Baba Chews Bar and Eatery. Situated on the ground floor of the former Joo Chiat Police Station turned Peranakan-themed Hotel Indigo, the restaurant follows suit in décor – tiles covered in striking floral motifs cover the floor, a pattern reflected in the metal plates on the ceiling, while black accents on white walls and retro plush chairs evoke the glamorous feel of the past.
The multi-faceted head chef Alvin Leong leads the kitchen as it caters to different menus throughout the day. For breakfast or brunch on the weekends (from 10.30am to 3pm), expect safe varieties of egg dishes, pancakes and the like. Leong’s All-day Dining options are more compelling: a smattering of Southeast Asian and Western flavours including signature creations by celebrity chefs Sam Leong and Ian Kittichai, the result of the Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) Culinary Ambassador programme. Seasoned foodies should head straight for the dinner menu, a list of mouth-watering Peranakan offerings that showcase a plethora of flavours – spiced, creamed and fermented – the cuisine is famed for.
