Research Scientist at Shiseido Professional Japan, Ritsuko Ehama, was in town recently to join Shiseido Professional Singapore in celebrating 100 years of scalp care research. In this exclusive interview, she shared with us her insights on the Fuente Forte series, and how Shiseido Professional is paving the way to the future in scalp care.

Q: Tell us more about the Shiseido Professional Fuente Forte Scalp Essence treatment. How do you think it stands out from the existing scalp treatments that are available in the market?

Ritsuko Ehama: Fuente Forte offers advanced scalp care based on Shiseido's accumulated knowledge in both skincare science and hair biology. For example, we have elucidated a mechanism on how scalp troubles affect the growing hair properties at the molecular level, and have found some ingredients (i.e. ginkgo leaf extract or glycyrrhizinate dipotassium) to prevent scalp issues. The Fuente Forte Power Beauty Drop contains a new and improved formula that features many beneficial ingredients, which provides the most appropriate solution tailored to different scalp conditions.

Q: What are the differences between the Shiseido Flowline and the Fuente Forte Scalp Essence?

RE: While Flowline was basically a product aiming for hair growth, Fuente Forte is rather designed to maintain healthy scalp itself and further to aid in the growth of healthier and bouncy hair.

Q: How do you see the Shiseido Professional brand evolving, in terms of technology and advancement? What can we expect from Shiseido Professional, say in the next 5 years?

RE: The Shiseido Professional brand has been evolving by incorporating the latest technologies from the Shiseido Research Center. As we intensively invest in anti-aging research, you can expect innovative anti-aging products and services from Shiseido Professional. Needless to say, the ADENOVITAL range will be kept animated continuously.

Q: What do you think was missing in the hair care market and how did Shiseido Professional address that with the Adenovital Scalp treatment range?

RE: The population of those who are concerned about hair loss or thinning hair is huge in every country. For such people, available measures were mainly receiving medical treatments or buying scalp tonics at pharmacies. However, we thought that hair salons should be the place for such people to solve their concerns with the help of professionals. That is why we developed ADENOVITAL Scalp Essence and Scalp Essence V with proven effectiveness, followed by the new in-salon treatment. The new in-salon treatment delivers increased amount of adenosine, the key active of the range, together with a relaxing sensation.

Q: Share with us an intriguing fact about hair and scalp biology.

RE: It is widely known that maintaining the scalp in a good condition is important for healthy hair growth, however, any adequate evidence was not available. I assume that not so many people are aware of the importance of hair thickness in hair loss, especially in men. Even in severe hair loss, the number of hairs per unit area does not change much. Therefore, restoring its original thickness in their hair, which is one of the effects of adenosine (a key ingredient of ADENOVITAL), is quite effective to treat hair loss. Recently, Shiseido has started research on hair regeneration therapy. A wide range of regenerative therapies (not just limited to those for the skin) are making dramatic progress (including iPS cell research for which Dr. Yamanaka received the Nobel Prize). By using such regenerative medicine technologies, we believe we may be able to offer new modes of treatment to solve concerns about hair loss and thinning hair that previously could not be addressed by conventional methods.
