Kray Chen has been in the critical spotlight recently, with residences at FRAC des Pays de la Loire in France and the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art in Singapore, and exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore and Art Stage. His practice deals with corporeality and lived experience. Chen’s video work is distinctive in the way it features the artist endlessly and repetitively engaging in familiar motions, such as climbing stairs and queueing, set in recognisable spaces including the supermarket, the traffic intersection and the HDB stairwell. By bringing light to movements, behaviours and gestures familiar to him and his viewer, Chen gives visibility to characteristics particular to Singapore, as it embarks on its relentless route of progress. Through his works, viewers are invited to reflect on the unique psyche of a place constantly caught between labour and gratification, between fragments and the whole. Visit
