At a glance, the mixed-media pieces in this series might seem like a random mash of textiles and images, but a closer inspection will reveal a more cultural dimension to the silk-screened canvases. Created by South African artist and textile designer Deborah McKellar, the 13 pieces reflect how four cultural groups – Chinese, Peranakan, Indian and European – affect and influence Singapore. A blend of images, from colonial houses to everyday scenes of old men playing chess, and representative materials, such as Peranakan beaded slippers, form a reflective collage of Singapore’s identity that invites you to take a closer look.
