The Xiaomi’s MIUI V5 OS in your Redmi or Mi 3 is brimming with new features that you may not have realized. Here are 7 tricks we’ve discovered which you may find useful.

SWITCH BETWEEN LOCK SCREEN AND MUSIC PLAYER

The standard MIUI home screen lets you access the call log (swipe left), camera (swipe up), messages (swipe right) and unlock (swipe down). If you want to listen to music without unlocking the phone, double tap on the centre of the circle (orange glow) and it will switch from the home screen to one with music controls.

LONG PRESS BACK BUTTON AS SHORTCUT TO CAMERA

While some smartphones allow you to unlock straight into the Camera app via a dedicated shutter button or put a shortcut on the lock screen to activate the camera, MIUI allows you to unlock ditectly by long pressing the back button on the lock screen.

LONG PRESS BACK TO CLOSE CURRENT APP

Pressing the Back button in most Android devices does not close the current app. In MIUI, there is an option for you to close the current app by long pressing the Back button. This will help prevent apps from running in the background and consuming unnecessary resources (battery and data).

MASS DELETION OF APPS

Execute a pinch gesture on the home screen to go to “Edit Mode”. Tap, not drag on the apps that you want to uninstall and they will be directed to the bottom of the screen. Once the apps have transitioned to the bottom of the screen, use a pinch gesture to group them together. Drag the entire stack to the top to uninstall them.

KEEP CERTAIN APP(S) RUNNING WHILE CLOSING THE REST

Android smartphones with built-in task managers require you to manually select which apps to close or close all of them at one go. MIUI gives you the freedom to decide which apps to continue running while you close the others at one go.

NETWORK SPEED

Ever wondered how fast your data connection is? MIUI has the option for you to see the connection speed on the status bar at the top. This option can be enabled or disabled via Settings > Notifications > Show connection speed.

LONG PRESS ANY ICON IN TOGGLES TO ACCESS ITS SETTINGS

While most, if not all, Android devices come with Quick Settings, not all of them support quick access to the individual setting page for the toggle. In MIUI, you can long press on any icon in Toggles to access its setting page.

Lock screens may vary depending on the themes used.

This feature can be enabled or disabled via Settings > Buttons > Back > Close current app.

The music shortcuts on the lock screen.

You can check the speed of your cellular connection… and Wi-Fi connection.

You can long press on the Wi-Fi toggle to enter its setting page and search for other Wi-Fi networks.

Hit the brush icon to clear all apps. The “locked” app will still continue running in the background.

The apps will be uninstalled at one go.
