“With great power comes great responsibility” – Uncle Ben

HWM (Singapore) - - ED'S NOTE - Zachary Chan Editor

This is the second time in the past six months that I’m borrowing good ol’ Unc Ben’s quote to reference the duality of the internet, but while I was previously writing about how easy social platforms are used to misguide, misinform and misdirect, recent trends seem to be far worse.

You see, for the most part, the internet is a prerecorded place, or it used to be. Written, video, audio or photographic content put up on any website is moderated and curated by actual people, just like any traditional media platform. Today, live streaming apps bypass any kind of lter that would have been in place and we’re increasingly being subjected to nightmare scenarios of broadcasted live murders and suicides.

In this issue of HWM, we explore some of these new digital world issues, big data manipulation and content regulation in our Think section. I urge you to have a read.

If you nd our cover story on mesh networking and perpetual connectivity a little ironic after such a somber topic, I think it’s the light at the end of the tunnel. After all, we have to keep moving forward.
