PATEK PHILIPPE REF. 5180/ 1
Introduced in 2008, Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5180/1 is produced in small numbers each year owing to the time it takes to create such an intricate timepiece. One glance explains why — only the hours and minutes hands interrupt one’s view of the movement’s components, which are extensively decorated and are arranged to achieve visual harmony. Like a minimalist frame for a piece of art, the 18k white gold casing ring is pierced to leave only 12 radial spokes as hour markers.
The internal components are hand-engraved to produce a filigreed look, while a Calatrava cross decorates the circular opening that exposes the mainspring barrel. A 22k gold mini-motor is integrated into the plate and engraved with arabesques on both sides, while the plate of its suspension system is pierced to such a degree that only a few curved struts remain. The watch features the ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240 movement with a power reserve of at least 48 hours.
