GOOD GYM HABITS

THREE THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT WORKOUT AREA FILTH.

Men's Health (Singapore) - - HEALTH -

1 Gymnasium germs are generally not dangerous. “Tons of bacteria are shed while people exercise,” says Dr Susan Whittier, a clinical microbiologist at New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center. “But they’re rarely pathogenic.”

2 The locker room floor is the riskiest spot. Tests have found candida, which could cause an infection similar to athlete’s foot, and klebsiella, which is found in faeces. Cut the risk by wearing flip-flops into the shower, suggests Dr Whittier.

3 Tests will find gym equipment filled with bacteria. If you’re freaked out about this, wipe down benches and mats with the gym’s sanitiser. – AngelaGiannopoulos
