MH INTERVIEW: CORY RICHARDS
The award-winning photographs of Cory Richards, a NationalGeographic lensman and The North Face athlete, have one thing in common: They speak of endurance in the face of suffering. That the triumph of human spirit over adversity should appeal to the 32-year- old is of little surprise. In 2011, while on his way to becoming the first American to scale the treacherous Gasherbrum II in winter, Richards and his team were buried by a class-four avalanche – one deemed large enough to destroy several buildings. The adventurer recounts the vulnerability he felt at having to confront one of the most destructive forces in nature halfway up the 8,034m mountain in Pakistan, and what fuelled his love of exploring some of the world’s most inhospitable places.
