As more and more Bri­tish men notch up 50 hours at the of­fice each week, it comes as lit­tle sur­prise that many of them are walk­ing, zom­bielike, to­wards a men­tal health cri­sis. Bri­tain’s rep­u­ta­tion as one of the world’s most peren­ni­ally tired na­tions – with one in three now reg­u­larly suf­fer­ing from in­som­nia – is an ex­haust­ing symp­tom of work-re­lated stress, a prob­lem to which they lose 12.5 mil­lion work­ing days each year.

But now that you’ve been jolted awake with some night­mar­ish statis­tics, here is some dreamier news. Ac­cord­ing to re­searchers, a sim­ple oil change in the kitchen can cure your stress-re­lated sleep­ing prob­lems. A chem­i­cal found in rice bran oil has been proven to com­bat the ef­fects of sleep­less­ness borne out of the of­fice.

Re­search pub­lished in the jour­nal Nu­tri­ents found that phy­tos­terols in this oil have a potent hyp­notic ef­fect. Firstly, fer­ulic acid low­ers lev­els of the hor­mone sero­tonin in your blood. Nor­mally as­so­ci­ated with hap­pi­ness, sero­tonin lev­els also rise dur­ing the day when ex­posed to sun­shine, help­ing you to feel more awake. Keep them in check, then, and you should drift off more eas­ily.

An­other phy­tos­terol in rice bran oil, y-oryzanol, also in­hibits your his­tamine re­cep­tors.

His­tamine is an in­flam­ma­tory agent re­leased by your im­mune sys­tem that can put your body on edge at around 3am. Block the re­cep­tors and you should sleep right through.

Cru­cially, sci­en­tists at the Uni­ver­sity of Tsukuba in Ja­pan found these ben­e­fits to be spe­cific to those suf­fer­ing from anx­i­ety-in­duced in­so­mia, by tar­get­ing and low­er­ing lev­els of stress hormones in the blood.

Of course, you needn’t give up your ex­tra vir­gin al­to­gether (nor a gen­er­ous dash of bal­samic and some crusty bread). But when dead­line anx­i­ety kicks in, a swap to rice bran oil for your evening meal will pro­vide a sim­ple, tasty fix for undis­rupted shut­eye.
