THEONE
Cameo appearances in TV shows and movies have only boosted the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman’s popularity. It was a mainstay in “Frasier” and “Gossip Girl,” and a guest star in “Closer” and “Tron: Legacy,” among many others. It’s also part of permanent collections in museums including MoMA and the Art Institute of Chicago.
But its appeal rests mostly on the design, which blends supreme comfort and aesthetics. The seat, for example, is permanently tilted at a 15-degree angle to take the weight off the lower spine and distribute it to the back of the chair — a revolutionary idea in 1956, when Charles and Ray Eames launched the piece, as much as it is today.
The hand-assembled chair and ottoman have shells made of seven-ply cherry, natural cherry, walnut, or santos palisander shells — the last being a richly grained veneer from a sustainable tropical wood that has replaced the original and now endangered Brazilian rosewood. The cushions are individually upholstered 6-inch-thick urethane foam.
Die-cast aluminum is used in the back braces and bases of both the chair and ottoman. The chair base has a built-in swivel mechanism. Resilient natural rubber serves as shock mounts.
