This ewer from Xuande Imperial ial Kilns, which bears the mark of the 1426-1435 period, is rare and important rtant as no other ewer of this form and period riod appears to have survived. It follows ows a Sassanian metal prototype and d is painted in soft tones of underglaze blue, with a large composite floral meander nder that includes peony, musk mallow w and lotus. The 33cm-tall ewer also features atures an unusual curved, square-sectioned spout; a double-gourd-shaped aperture; and a six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle on its base. www.sothebys.com
