This ewer from Xuande Im­pe­rial ial Kilns, which bears the mark of the 1426-1435 pe­riod, is rare and im­por­tant rtant as no other ewer of this form and pe­riod riod ap­pears to have sur­vived. It fol­lows ows a Sas­sa­nian metal pro­to­type and d is painted in soft tones of un­der­glaze blue, with a large com­pos­ite flo­ral me­an­der nder that in­cludes pe­ony, musk mal­low w and lo­tus. The 33cm-tall ewer also fea­tures atures an un­usual curved, square-sec­tioned spout; a dou­ble-gourd-shaped aper­ture; and a six-char­ac­ter mark in un­der­glaze blue within a dou­ble cir­cle on its base. www.sothe­bys.com
