You love your man, but his hy­giene sucks and he isn’t ex­actly a poster child for a healthy lifestyle. Well, get this: His gross habits could be af­fect­ing your health, too.

He al­ways over-or­ders at restau­rants, or only likes cer­tain foods

Go­ing out with a man who loves food is fun. What’s not to like about try­ing new dishes and restau­rants? The prob­lem with your guy, how­ever, is that he al­ways or­ders too much food when you eat out to­gether, and you al­ways feel obliged to clean your plate.

The con­se­quence over the long term: Weight gain and the prob­lems as­so­ci­ated with it, such as an in­creased risk of di­a­betes, hy­per­ten­sion and car­dio­vas­cu­lar dis­ease.

Susie Rucker, a nu­tri­tional ther­a­pist at Body With Soul sug­gests ex­er­cis­ing re­straint, par­tic­u­larly when you are shar­ing many dishes. Or, sim­ply in­sist that he or­der less. “You may also wish to have some­thing light be­fore leav­ing the house. That way, you won’t ar­rive at the res­tau­rant half-starved and tempted to or­der ev­ery­thing on the menu, or eat ev­ery­thing that’s in front of you. Pig­ging out once in a while is okay, but if you and your boyfriend eat like this a few times a week, you have to ex­ert some self-con­trol.”

Another way to avoid temp­ta­tion: Por­tion out a healthy serv­ing for your­self and ask for the re­main­ing to be packed for take­away. If your man is a fussy eater, Susie sug­gests mak­ing healthy dishes more vis­ually ap­peal­ing or sub­sti­tut­ing un­healthy foods for health­ier ones.

For ex­am­ple, in­stead of fries, make baked sweet potato wedges driz­zled with co­conut oil, or serve quinoa in­stead of rice. Bor­ing green sal­ads can also be dressed up with prawns and a va­ri­ety of coloured and crunchy veg­eta­bles (think bell pep­pers and baby corn).
