MOLTEN IS GOLDEN

Will it ooze or will it not? The Simply Her team eagerly dug into three takeaway chocolate lava cakes.

ORIGINAL MOLTEN CAKE

$6.50 each or $36 for six From 3 Inch Sin, #01-103 Millenia Walk, tel: 6333-4562.

This boasted the best cake-to-lava proportion – there was just enough of the dense cake to add bite to the luscious melted Valrhona chocolate filling. We loved the slight bitterness that tempered the cake’s sweet richness. It was also the quickest to heat up, at just 10 seconds in the microwave oven.

SIGNATURE DARK CHOCOLATE

$2.80 each, $8.20 for three, or $24 for nine From Smoulder, #B1-68 Raffles City Shopping Centre, tel: 6338-0661.

This bite-sized baby is the perfect treat when you want a spot of dessert that’s satisfying but not overwhelming. Three minutes in the oven at 160 deg C turned the exterior nice and crusty; the molten core didn’t flow out when we cut into it, but it was smooth and thick. This was the sweetest of the lot, so children may prefer it over its bittersweet contenders.

CHOCOLATE LAVA CAKE

$6.80 each From Domino’s Pizza, www.dominos.com.sg

We were genuinely surprised to find this gem of a chocolate lava cake – beneath the crusty baked top was a pool of gooey, hot fudge-like goodness that we happily lapped up. Our only gripe was with the cake base, which was a bit too soggy. It’s a large portion, so order this to share among at least three persons, or you may find it too cloying.
